Crabtree Falls is the tallest waterfall east of the Mississippi. It’s a beautiful uphill hike of 2 1/2 miles to the top of the falls that provides a beautiful view of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Actually, the hike itself is like a climb to the heavens.
The Falls are located in the George Washington National Forest. Crabtree Falls Nature Center and parking area is located on state route 56, just 19 miles west of U. S. Highway 29 in Nelson County, Virginia or 6 miles east of the intersection of state route 56 and the Blue Ridge Parkway.
We headed out to CrabTree Falls this past weekend, and were a little disappointed with some pet owners who were bringing their dogs on the hike up to the top of the falls. It almost reminded me of Paris. Not exactly except for the doggie doo doo on the trail. We love dogs but please remember to scoop your pet’s poop.
Crabtree Falls is also famous for its connection to the well-known television show The Waltons. The falls were not shown on television, but the name was referred to several times during the life of the program, usually in reference to a Sunday outing.
If you're looking for a Sunday outing of your own without John Boy, there’s a $3.00 per fee to enter the park. The trails are steep in places so be sure to bring good hiking shoes.
There are great accomidations including RV slots (up to 30 feet) at Crabtree Falls Campground as well as great cabins at The Cabins of Crabtree Falls.
